Our Community Education Section Provides:

 

Two-day courses on sexual assault issues aimed at specific sectors of the community, eg           

- Mental health

- Drug and alcohol

- Disabilities

- Youth

- Medical practitioners

Free in-service sessions for any service, agency, group or department, designed specifically to meet the needs of the requesting agency. These range from basic sexual assault information to more advanced or specific areas.

Information sessions and talks for school students in the ACT and surrounding region.

  • Protective behaviours sessions for young women in schools

  • Term long programs on gender and violence for ACT schools or tertiary institutions.

  • Information packages

  • Library service, including videos, books, tapes and handouts

  Topics Covered By Our Education Section Include:

  • myths and facts about sexual assault

  • adult sexual assault

  • child sexual assault

  • ritual abuse

  • effects and indicators of sexual assault

  • how to deal with disclosures

  • legal and medical information

  • worker care and debriefing

  • links between sexual assault and other issues such as: drug and alcohol use, mental health, homelessness, etc

  • issues to consider in counselling

  • group work

  • case studies

Rights and Needs Of Someone Who Has Been Sexually Assaulted

  • to be reminded it was not their fault

  • to be believed

  • to be listened to

  • their experience validated as significant

  • to be in control of what happens

  • a non-judgemental attitude

  • understanding of their trauma

  • safety and privacy

  • opportunity to talk at their own pace

  • encouragement to accept help and support information
